BOWLING GREEN AWARDED 2009
AND 2010 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Commonwealth
Gridiron Bowl to be at Houchens L.T. Smith Stadium
BOWLING GREEN,
Ky. – The Kentucky
High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control voted
to accept Bowling Green’s bid to be the host city for the
2009 and 2010 Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl. The decision was made
this morning at KHSAA headquarters in Lexington, Ky.
Louisville has
been the host city for the State Football Championships for the
past 29 years. Bowling Green submitted the only bid to host the
tournament in the upcoming seasons.
“We have
been working diligently to bring this prestigious competition to
Bowling Green for the past two years. Now the real work begins,”
Amy Cardwell, Sports Marketing Director for the Bowling
Green Area CVB, said. “We feel the community excitement
growing every day.”
The 2009 and
2010 Gridiron Bowls will take place at Western Kentucky University’s
Houchens L.T. Smith Stadium. Current renovations are increasing
seating capacity from 17,500 to 25,000. The number of hotel rooms
in the city also has increased to just under 2,500 over the past
several years. Both of these increases were among the criteria qualifying
Bowling Green to make a bid for the event.
