GIRLS' TURN AT HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT PLAY

Wendy’s/ IGA Lady Gator Holiday Showcase Starts Wednesday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Greenwood Lady Gators are hosting the first Wendy’s/IGA Holiday Showcase December 26-29 at Greenwood High School. The tournament has potential to put some of the state’s best players head to head.

The tournament includes Hart Co., Adair Co., Pulaski Co., Fern Creek, Rockcastle Co., Muhlenberg North, Mercer Co., Atherton and Cumberland Co., plus 4th region Franklin-Simpson, Greenwood and Warren East.

The state’s top two scorers last season, Monique Reid of Fern Creek and Ashley Rainey of Warren East, were pre-season number one pick players for their region. Reid, a 6’1” senior point guard, has signed with the University of Louisville and is averaging 38 points and 18.3 rebounds per game. Rainey, a 6’2” junior center/ forward, is a top recruiting target and was ranked number 13 in the pre-season poll of coaches.

Also looking strong in region four is Kelleshia Cook and Brittany Payne of Franklin-Simpson, and Lauren Mahaney of Warren East. Cook and Hart County’s Megan Isaacs both landed on Rick Bolus’ ‘America’s Top Seniors’ list. Mahaney is pre-season pick number five in region four with Payne coming in eighth in the region.

Muhlenberg North led region three in pre-season picks with second and sixth ranked players in the region Abby Steele and Rachel Underwood. Steele is a 5’8” senior guard and Underwood is a 6’1” senior center.

Other players to watch are Hart County’s Lindsay Highbaugh, Rockcastle County’s Sarah Rowe and freshman forward Sara Hammond, and Fern Creek’s Sherrice Gaines. Rowe, a 5’10” senior small forward is pre-season pick number one in the twelfth region.
