Shaker Museum at South Union to Host Annual Seminar

"Are These Not Perilous Times" April 25-26, 2008

SOUTH UNION, Ky.The Shaker Museum at South Union is preparing for its April 25-26 seminar “Are These Not Perilous Times?”

The Seminar, which highlights the Civil War’s impact on the Shakers, will feature readings from a manuscript diary of Eldress Nancy Moore as well as other journal references to the period between 1861 and 1865. A manuscript copy of a letter written from the South Union Shakers to President Abraham Lincoln will also be on display during the weekend.

Other highlights include presentations by noted speakers, a new exhibit on the Civil War and a period Shaker meal.

Executive Director Tommy Hines said this year’s seminar is a worthy tribute to the state-wide Lincoln Bicentennial celebration.

Hines said: “Kentucky is celebrating the 200th birthday of its most famous son, Abraham Lincoln, in 2008 and 2009. This year's seminar examines the relationship between Lincoln and the state where he was born. The seminar will also take a close look at the Civil War and its affect on the Shakers and their neighbors. Through special exhibits, living history presentations, noted speakers, and period meals, our participants will experience a South Union Seminar probably more exciting and innovative than ever before. I can promise that it will be one you will not forget.”

This year’s seminar features speakers Nancy Disher Baird of Western Kentucky University, presenting “The Philistines Are Upon Us:” Bowling Green During the Civil War and Dr. John Kleber of Morehead State University and University of Louisville, presenting Kentucky’s Abraham Lincoln.
