12&U Fast Pitch Northern Nationals
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Michael Buchanon Park, Basil Griffin Park & Ephram White will be the host sites for the 12 and Under Class B Fast Pitch Northern Territory Nationals this week in Bowling Green. The city was chosen by the Amateur Softball Association to host the event with play starting Thursday, July 30, and the Championships scheduled for Sunday, August 2.
There are 30 teams from over 8 states represented and each team has qualified through their own regional events to win the honor to play in Bowling Green. Each team is guaranteed at least 4 games to make the tournament a 180+ game event. Teams start arriving in Bowling Green Tuesday, and the week’s events will kick off with a Coach’s Breakfast and Tournament draw at the Holiday Inn Wednesday morning. Opening Ceremonies take place at Diddle Arena Wednesday night at 6pm.
“Our central location and past successes in hosting sporting events were major factors in the ASA Council’s decision to bring this event to Bowling Green,” said Brenda Petty, Junior Olympics Slow and Fast Pitch Commissioner for Kentucky.
Petty, also the Supervisor of Buchanon Park, and Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Sports Director Amy Cardwell attended the ASA Council Meeting last year to present the bid. “Bowling Green has many of the best facilities in the country,” Cardwell said. “The ease of travel between fields is also important due to the higher number of fans traveling with a youth sporting event. This is wonderful exposure for our city, and we hope they will want to return for a future visit.”
The Amateur Softball Association is the National Governing Body of softball in the U.S. ASA conducts over 90 Championships annually in three categories of competition; slow, fast and modified pitch. This particular tournament was in Springfield, MO last year and previously has not been held in Kentucky.
