Bowling Green is Geared for Foodies as we celebrate Duncan Hines’ birthday month! Celebrate our native travel writer and food critic learning more about his life in Louis Hatchett’s “The Man Behind the Cake Mix.”

Originally issued in 1996, Hatchett’s “The Man Behind the Cake Mix” is being reissued in honor of Hines’ birthday, March 26.

Taking a further look at the book, you’ll find there is more to Hines than the familiar name that lines the baking isles at the grocery store.  In fact, his cake mix was a result of the recognition earned as a food expert.

Hines started out as a traveling salesman in the 1940’s.  As such, he was given the opportunity to eat at several different locations.  He started publishing a book on the various places recommended to fellow travelers.

An innovator of his generation, soon his eating guides were in every traveler’s car as the ultimate guide to dining. Hines became one of the most trusted names in the food industry.

We celebrate the legacy of this man behind the cake mix each summer with the Duncan Hines Festival in Bowling Green. Families bring the kids for Uncle Duncan’s Duck Derby, the Adventures in Good Baking Contest and more. For this first time this year, the festival will be held at Chaney’s Dairy Barn & Restaurant on July 12.

Bowling Green also homes the “Recommended by Duncan Hines” exhibit at the Kentucky Museum, plus the Duncan Hines Scenic Byway along historic Highway 68.

Blow out the candles and celebrate with us.
