The Kentucky Museum and VSA arts of Kentucky have again partnered to produce an exhibition of artwork created during VSA arts workshops held at the museum. The exhibit features artwork of students with disabilities, area artists, and the artwork they have created collaboratively. VSA arts of Kentucky is a statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting arts, education and creative expression for all, with an emphasis on persons with disabilities. Regular exhibition hours are Monday - Saturday 9am - 4pm and Sunday 1-4pm. Side by Side is a statewide program of VSA Kentucky. Other Side by Side programs take place in Edgewood, Louisville, Lexington, Murray, Somerset, and Whitesburg. Students take a series of classes that are followed by one on one collaborative sessions with area artists, this being the inspiration for the title, Side by Side. The exhibitions typically include the student's work, the artist's work, and their collaborative pieces. Other Side by Side exhibition sites include, The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville, The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, The Explorium in Lexington, and The Clara M. Eagle Gallery at Murray State University. The Side by Side program in Whitesburg takes place at Appalshop where the students focus on traditional Appalachian music and documentary film making and performances take place at the Annual Seedtime Festival. Side by Side exhibitions and performances provide an opportunity for the public to see what we do and participate in VSA Kentucky programs. The Side by Side program enables student artists to explore the creative process as a group in small classes, in addition to receiving individual attention from a professional artist mentor. It highlights the importance of the role of local artists in the life of their community and provides organizations the opportunity to build bridges by bring diverse groups of citizens together to learn through, participate in, and enjoy the art! VSA Kentucky is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing inclusive arts and education programs for children, youth, and adults with disabilities, in addition to, professional development for artists and teachers in schools and communities statewide.
