Pious man of God, or unscrupulous con-man? That's a question as relevant today as it was in 1664, when Moliere's "Tartuffe" premiered at the Court of Louis XIV in Versailles. Which perhaps explains why, even after having been immediately banned by both the King and the Catholic Church, this hilarious, sharp witted satire has nevertheless enjoyed a virtually continuous production, somewhere in the world, ever since.
