When you step into Smiths Grove, Kentucky, you immediately feel the embrace of a community rooted in history, charm, and collaboration. Nestled about halfway between Bowling Green and Mammoth Cave National Park, this quaint town has transformed from a modest gas station stop into a thriving destination for visitors, making Smiths Grove an essential stop in any Bowling Green itinerary. Few people understand this evolution better than Luke Jean, owner of Balance Distilling Company and an advocate for the unique appeal of Smiths Grove.

“When my family moved here in 2019 after my time in the Army, we were drawn to the small-town charm,” Jean says. “Smiths Grove’s downtown has grown into a hub for shoppers, tourists, and locals alike. It’s a place where community spirit and entrepreneurship intersect.”

A Collaborative Community

The thriving business ecosystem in Smiths Grove is built on collaboration. Jean emphasizes the relationships between local businesses like Bluegrass Vineyard, Sly Coffee, and beloved shops such as Main Street Antiques and Marigold Vintage.

“We all work together to ensure our guests have an authentic Smiths Grove experience,” Jean explains. “If you need great coffee, stop by Sly Coffee. For amazing Kentucky wine, visit the ladies at Bluegrass Vineyard. Our businesses don’t compete; we lift each other up to create a memorable visit for everyone.”

Jean speaks highly of Bluegrass Vineyard, calling it a “community center” that fosters connection through award-winning wines, live entertainment, and unmatched hospitality. The partnership between Bluegrass Vineyard and Balance Distilling highlights the cooperative spirit of Smiths Grove’s craft beverage scene. “We’re always recommending each other to guests,” Jean notes. “In the future, I’d love to create a collaborative Bluegrass x Balance Brandy.”

This philosophy—“a rising tide lifts all boats”—shapes the character of the town, enhancing its charm and appeal. Visitors can feel the unity as they explore, from sipping coffee to uncovering vintage treasures.

The Story of Balance Distilling Company

For Jean, founding Balance Distilling Company was more than a business opportunity—it was a way to tell stories. It was also an opportunity for a full family venture.

“I started Balance Distilling as an expression of my desire to preserve and share narratives that resonate with people,” he says. “Our distillery started with crafting Kentucky rum and gin and has expanded to include moonshine and bourbon. Along the way, we uncovered stories of moonshiners and revenuers battling across the state and rediscovered Mammoth Cave Bourbon, a brand dating back to 1869.”

The revival of Mammoth Cave Bourbon has been a highlight for Jean. “Since its release, we’ve had former tour guides, rangers, and cave enthusiasts visit to celebrate its return. Sharing that success with the community has been incredible.”

Jean’s commitment to local sourcing—including using corn from Hays Feed and Seed—and his veteran-owned and family-operated business model make Balance Distilling a standout in the craft spirits industry. Visitors can experience this blend of history, innovation, and community pride firsthand at the distillery.

Meanwhile, Balance Distilling Company is truly a family farm distillery. “My mother-in-law, Lory, is our director of customer experience, my father-in-law, Ken, is the assistant distiller and manages brand development, my sister-in-law, Cassi, handles our art direction, and Creste, my wife, manages the agriculture side of our business” Jean explains.
