Scenic, Simple… and Shopping!

Love what you see, but ready to test drive this puppy out on the back roads?  Go ahead… cruise the countryside to these destinations.

Enjoy life in the slow lane as you head out in the country to Chaney’s Dairy Barn, Jackson’s Orchard, and the Shaker Museum at South Union.  Then follow the Duncan Hines Scenic Byway and be sure to stop for a tour of Mammoth Cave National Park and some antiquing in Smiths Grove on this 82-mile loop.   Add in some of the other must–sees along the way and you’ve got a full 2 days on this trek.

The rolling hills of South Central KY are a sight to behold. There’s no better way to explore our hills & hollers than by taking a country cruise. So strap in and take your time down winding roads to these popular destinations… you’ll discover a simpler way of life.

  • Begin your day by traveling west of Bowling Green to South Union where a large Shaker community once flourished. The Shaker Museum at South Union consists of nine buildings open for tours and the Centre House holds the largest collection of Shaker West furniture in the nation.

  • Cruise the back roads along Highway 240 to US 31W where Chaney’s Dairy Barn awaits. This family-owned and operated dairy farm offers self-guided tours of their state-of-the-art robotic milkers before heading into the huge red barn for homemade ice cream, soups and sandwiches plus lots of Kentucky Proud products.

  • As you head back into Bowling Green, don’t miss Lost River Cave & Valley for an underground boat tour. Then take a trek along Veteran’s Memorial Blvd. to the north side of the county for a visit to Jackson’s Orchard. With over 11,000 apple, peach and cherry trees, the Orchard is always blooming and bustling between April and November and hosts several seasonal festivals.

  • On day two, fill up the tank and hit the open road just like Duncan Hines and his wife Clara did back in the heyday of car travel. The Duncan Hines Scenic Byway begins and ends at the former home and office of the cake mix king, and takes you past beautiful vistas, rolling farmland, historic churches, and quaint communities.

  • You’ll pass through Mammoth Cave National Park on this journey and cross the Green River by ferry. Do take the time to explore the area a bit and if you’re feeling adventurous, head down below into the longest known cave system in the world. Many different tours are available at varying levels of difficulty including a mobility impaired accessible tour.

  • As you wind back in to Warren County, stop in Smiths Grove and visit the antique district for some treasure hunting. One way or another, you are sure to bring home some pieces of Kentucky after taking this test drive.
